Welcome to Douglas & Hardy

Douglas & Hardy is staffed by dedicated optometrists and passionate assistants who continuously enhance their skills and expand their expertise, to stay at the forefront of optometric eye care and visual aid innovation

While we take care of ourselves and our kids and go to the general practitioner (GP) or dentist for regular check-ups, we sometimes tend to overlook our eye – and optical, health our window to our soul.

Remember a basic vision screening, like those done when you renew your driving license or by a school nurse, is no substitute for a  professional eye exam with your optometrist at Douglas & Hardy. Read More...

Answers to Popular Questions

  • What is the best way to clean my spectacles?
    • For perfect spectacle care :
      • Rinse eye glasses under running water and clean with hand-soap
      • Use your Douglas & Hardy cleaning cloth when cleaning eye glasses in dry state
      • For more stubborn soiling, use appropriate eye glass cleaning sprays
      • When out and about, use pre-moistened lens cleaning wipes from Zeiss
      • Ideally, you should take your spectacles to your optician for cleaning in an ultrasound bath
  • When should I test my child’s eyes?
No child is too young to be examined, particularly if you suspect that there may be an issue. Even an infant can be examined if necessary to rule out squints and high refractive errors. Eye problems need to be diagnosed as early as possible to ensure that a child’s vision system develops normally. All children should have a full comprehensive examination (over and above a school screening) from the age of 5 - 7 years old. This ensures that your child’s vision system is functioning optimally for the modern day demands of schooling as well as the learning process. Teenagers and young adults should generally have an eye examination done every two years.
  • How often should you have your eyes examined?
Adults over the age of 50 should have an annual eye examination. Most eye conditions develop with age and are “silent” conditions, in that no pain is experienced and the vision change is imperceptibly slow. An annual exam will help to detect these slight changes at an early stage which will aid your specific treatment. Eyes can also lose focusing ability with age and an increase in reading strength or power will be required every year or two.
