Low Vision Patient Information:
If you have been diagnosed with a permanent visual impairment that cannot be corrected with regular glasses, surgery, or other medical treatment you can consult with Douglas & Hardy for a full evaluation and rehabilitation of your low vision condition. The purpose of your appointment with Douglas & Hardy is to evaluate your remaining vision diagnosis and educate you on the different techniques and methods to use the low vision device chosen for you specifically to assist you to retain functional vision
Douglas & Hardy will present you with three different options to help you with your remaining vision:
- Learning to use your better seeing eye through specific eye movement skills
- Using alternative methods to perform certain tasks.
- These may include better lighting
- High contrast/enlarged print
- Auditory hearing techniques
- Using special optical devices such as magnifiers, spectacle microscopes, and telescopes
These techniques may improve your ability to see fine detail, but due to the high powers involved, special fittings and training is required for optimum performance. To prepare for your appointment, the patient needs to communicate specific problems they may encounter at home, work, or school, that are related to their vision impairment. For instance, the things you would like to be able to see better – think about realistic goals for using your reduced vision.
The examination with Douglas & Hardy might be lengthy and we advise that you bring along a spouse, parent or a family member. Be sure to bring any glasses or magnifying aids that you are currently using for our professionals to get an idea of what you are currently utilising. If you have any special materials you would like to be able to work with, bring them as well.
The low vision optometrist at Douglas & Hardy’s goal is to improve your ability to function with the remaining vision you do have, as your vision will be reduced for the rest of your life.
